UK Horse Racing Tips: Southwell

BRISTOL HILL was an impressive winner over the extended 1m4f at Newcastle last week and the Kevin Frost-trained five-year-old is hard to oppose on the back of that performance, despite having to carry a 5lb penalty. Jackamundo hit the crossbar over C&D a couple of weeks ago and is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to note are Morani Kali and Habanero Star.

Lord Cherry accounted for Tom Tulliver in a similar event over C&D a week ago but may not be able to confirm that form on 5lb worse terms. Preference is for the unexposed BOARHUNT, who sprung a surprise on his handicap debut at Wolverhampton and that gives him a big chance in a race of this nature. Thomas Equinas and Lady Ziana also make the shortlist.

Mabre and Turbo Command merit plenty of respect following recent victories, but they are not the most reliable of performers and preference is for DAAFY. Derek Shaw's gelding has been knocking hard on the door of late and was only beaten a length off this mark here nine days ago. Martin's Brig has been running consistently well in recent months and is another to note.

Ferrous and Yorkshire are both of interest on their return to action and appeal as shortlist material at least. The latter justified favouritism at Redcar when he was last seen and this 100,000gns son of Harry Angel looks a prime candidate to go well if he adapts to a synthetic surface. However, it might be worth chancing that SHARP POWER can make the most of his proven race fitness following his highly encouraging debut second at Kempton last month.

EMBLA heads the shortlist in a race that could well pan out to suit Alan Brown's mare. Best on the front end, the five-year-old retains plenty of enthusiasm and is taken to gain a second career success in what is a weak classified stakes on paper. Shining Crystal arrives in better form than most and can make sure the selection is tested to the line, while Sharrabang has a good record at this sort of level and he is a threat to all back at this trip.

Wadacre Grace and Finery appear closely matched on their C&D clash in January and warrant respect, while handicap debutant Mountain Queen is interesting following her impressive maiden success at Wolverhampton in November. However, receiving weight all round, SID'S ANNIE edges the vote. Mark Usher's filly brings winning C&D form to the table and looked slightly unlucky when touched off at Wolverhampton, when denied a clear run before finishing fast.

Seven of USTATH's nine career victories to date have come at this venue, albeit three were on the old Fibresand surface, and he was extremely game when scoring over 6f here last time. This drop back in distance is unlikely to pose any problems and he looks capable of defying a 2lb rise in the ratings. The Tron won nicely over C&D latest and should go close with a repeat performance, while Khulu and Nellie French are others to note.
