With the promise of more to come APPIER may well be up to carrying top-weight to victory at Pontefract on Tuesday. He won his first four starts in handicaps last season before regaining the winning thread on the AW at Newcastle back in September last year. He ended the season with a big run at Wolverhampton in October and back on turf on return off a mark of 76 he will likely be a danger to all here. Connor Planas is improving all the time so the 5lb claim looks value and with the yard in good form he has plenty going for him. Claritudo could also be capable of better having run well when last seen at Redcar in October last year. He is by Nathaniel so should keep improving this season but he hasn’t been seen for six months and might come on physically for the run.

The only last time out winner in the field SHUTTHEGATE looks well placed to follow up at Exeter on Tuesday. He was given a patient ride on stable debut the last day and despite mistakes made relentless headway under Jamie Moore. He took it up with thre to jump and seemed to find another gear before being left clear. He was going best at the time though and almost certainly had the race in the bag.

He remains lightly raced for his age especially over fences so an 8lb rise wouldn’t worry me too much as I think he can improve again. Eros often gives his running and was an agonising second at Warwick three weeks ago probably losing the race with a bad jump at the last. He is 2lb higher but should be bang there again. Investment Manager could also threaten but has plenty to prove having pulled up at Ffos Las when last seen.
