Following a 10/3 winner yesterday, Steve Ryder is back with three tips for today's action.
15:55 Pontefract
The David O’Meara trained SUMMERGHAND (best priced at 4/1) has been a fantastic servant to connections and hopefully he can appreciate this drop into an easier race. The nine-year-old is yet to win so far this season but has only been beaten 3, 6, 4 ¾ and 5 ¼ lengths in Class 2 handicaps on his previous four starts. His previous two victories came in 2022 off marks of 102 in the Ayr Gold Cup and in a listed race on the AW so he looks well handicapped off a mark of 100 in this race.
Summerghand now drops into a 0-105 handicap and he should prove hard to beat over this course and distance with Danny Tudhope back on board.
16:30 Pontefract
This looks like a winnable 0-75 handicap and I am willing to take a chance on SPRITZIN (best priced at 7/2) on her handicap debut. The daughter of Sea The Stars cost 265,000gns as a yearling and connections will be hoping that she proves a lot better than her opening mark of 68. She has finished well beaten on her first three career starts over a mile when sent off 20/1, 25/1 and 100/1 but she will no doubt now improve for a switch to handicaps.
Spritzin’ now steps up in trip to 1m4f on her handicap debut and she will have hopefully improved during her 271 days off the track. Course and distance winner Carrigillihy looks the biggest danger but it will be disappointing if Spritzin’ doesn’t make a winning handicap debut.
20:00 Brighton
This is a competitive 0-70 handicap with four last out winners but preference goes to DIAMOND COTTAGE (best priced at 9/2) who is 3/3 over this course and distance. The Malcolm Saunders trained six-year-old has been in good form so far this year winning three of her previous six starts including victories over this course and distance off marks of 53, 59 and 61.
Diamond Cottage beat Be Prepared by a neck 21 days ago and she should hold strong claims off only a 2lb higher mark. She is well drawn in Stall 3 and she should prove hard to beat under regular rider William Carson.
