With the fourth Ashes test starting today, the well named Bazball (best priced at 7/4) is expected to get off the mark at the sixth attempt. The Karl Burke trained filly finished well beaten on her first three career starts but has shown improvement on her previous two outings since the application of a visor. The two-year-old finished a 1 ¾ length 4th at York in a seller last month before finishing only ½ length behind the winner when 2nd at Catterick a week ago.

The handicapper has raised Bazball 3lbs for that latest run but she instead runs here off her previous mark of 57 meaning she is 3lbs “well in” in this race and I expect her to prove hard to beat with Clifford Lee back on board.

Bazball - 1pt @ 7/4

The Eve Johnson Houghton trained Silver Trumpet (best priced at 9/4) was the subject of strong market support on his debut at Windsor when sent off 3/1 favourite and he should hold strong claims in this race. The son of Advertise started slowly that day and raced in the rear of the field early before making some good late headway under minimal effort from jockey Charles Bishop.

Silver Trumpet ended up finishing a never nearer 6th beaten only 3 ¼ lengths and he is expected to build on that run and get off the mark at the second attempt.

Silver Trumpet - 1pt @ 9/4

15:52 Catterick

This looks a competitive 0-80 handicap but preference goes to three-time course and distance winner Quercus (best priced at 11/2). The Ann Duffield trained six-year-old has form figures of 611232221 over this course and distance in his career with the only time he didn’t finish in the frame being in July 2020. His latest victory came here a month ago off a mark of 51 by 1 ¼ lengths and he was only beaten ¾ length when 2nd at Thirsk 14 days ago.

The handicapper has raised Quercus 1lb up to a mark of 56 but that should prove within reach and he should run well with the in-form Joe Fanning taking over on board.

Quercus - 0.5pts e/w @ 11/2
