I thought SAINT JAGUEN was a real eye-catcher over C&D when last seen back in June. That was his hurdles debut and he still looked very raw getting outpaced early before coming back on the bit and briefly looking threatening until just keeping on in the closing stages. The favourite was long odds-on and eventually asserted in good style but he was the one I wrote down in my notes and with that initial experience under his belt I think he can take a big step forward now. He didn’t go unbacked the last day either suggesting they think a fair bit of him at home and I’m definitely keen to keep him on side. Rock On Harry obviously sets the standard and was only denied a short head at Worcester last month so will give the selection most to think about.

The likeable ON THE RIVER should prove hard to beat at Chester on Sunday. This progressive 4yo has won 4 of his last 6 and looked back to his best in testing ground at Beverley last month. He is up another 3lb but the runner-up Rhoscolyn franked the form winning at Goodwood earlier in the week so he looks the one to beat especially as he’ll relish the ground too. Ffion is useful on her day but she blew out at this track last time and needs first-time cheekpieces and a good draw to help get her back on track. I still think it might be a big enough ask. G’daay was back in the winners enclosure beating Metahorse at Epsom last month but he had the run of things off the front and will likely face competition for the lead here off the likes of Liamarty Dreams which will be far from ideal.
