Steve Ryder is back with five tips for today's action, with runners at Epsom, Newmarket and Thirsk.
13:50 Epsom
Many of these horses could show improvement on their handicap debuts but preference goes to Guns And Flowers (best priced at 7/4) who was only beaten ¾ length off this mark at Chester 12 days ago. The Alice Haynes trained filly won on her stable debut at Chelmsford in June before finishing 3rd on her handicap debut at Newmarket last month. She put in a career best performance to finish 2nd by less than length last time when the pair pulled 2 lengths clear of the third and a repeat of that performance should be enough to win this.
The handicapper has raised Guns And Flowers 4lbs up to a mark of 74 but she instead runs here 4lbs “well in” and she should prove hard to beat.
15:00 Epsom
Granary Queen is 2lbs “well in” at the weights but preference instead goes to Count Otto (best priced at 13/8) who comes here in search of a hat-trick. The Amanda Perrett trained eight-year-old won on his penultimate start over this course and distance off a mark of 74 before following up at Windsor a month ago off a mark of 75.
The handicapper has only raised Count Otto 3lbs for that success up to a mark of 78 but he has a good record at the track with form figures of 122091 and should prove hard to beat.
16:10 Epsom
The Malcolm Saunders trained Redredrobin (best priced at 2/1) has been in good form this year and she should continue her progress in this race. The six-year-old has form figures of 1121511 on turf this year with her latest two victories coming over this course and distance. She won off a mark of 69 in July by 1 ¼ lengths before following up off a mark of 73 last time when victorious by a length.
The handicapper has raised Redredrobin 3lbs for that victory which is fair and she should be able to complete a course and distance hat-trick.
17:45 Newmarket
The Phil McEntee trained Porfin (best priced at 13/2) ran well to finish 2nd at Yarmouth last time under a penalty and should hold strong claims off a 3lb lower mark. The five-year-old has recent form figures of 332312 including a victory over this course and distance on his penultimate start off a mark of 58. He ran only six days later under a 6lb penalty at Yarmouth where he finished 2nd by 1 ¼ lengths under Molly Presland.
Porfin runs here off a mark of 61 which means he is 4lbs “well in” at the weights with his new official rating of 65. This return to Newmarket should suit and he should run well with four places widely available.
19:45 Thirsk
Last year’s 1-2 Jamih and Valley Of Flowers are respected but preference goes to Edwina Sheeran (best priced at 7/2) who arrives in good recent form. The Roger Fell & Sean Murray trained three-year-old won at Ripon in June off a mark of 53 before following up over the same course and distance in July off a mark of 57. She finished 2nd at Leicester last time off a mark of 61 under Luke Morris.
Jonny Peate, who rode her to victory on her previous two starts, is back on board which is a positive and she runs here from 2lbs “well in” at the weights.
