This will be an attritional renewal of the Cesarewitch Handicap this year and that should suit GOSHEN (best priced at 12/1) who looks well handicapped off a flat mark of 88. The high-class hurdler was last seen finishing a neck 2nd to Knappers Hill in a Grade 2 Hurdle on soft ground in April but connections will have targeted this race for a long time.

Goshen last ran on the flat when a neck 2nd to Tritonic at Goodwood off a mark of 87 over 1m4f but this step up in trip will suit him a lot better. Stall 1 will mean that he races within a pack which should help with wayward tendencies and I am hoping he relishes this unique test.

With question marks about the ground for many of his rivals, I feel KNIGHT (best priced at 7/2) should prove hard to beat in this Group 3 Darley Stakes. The Simon & Ed Crisford trained three-year-old is yet to win this year but has run well to finish 2nd at Goodwood in the Group 2 Celebration Mile on soft ground and a head 2nd at Sandown last time in the listed Fortune Stakes on soft ground.

Knight won the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes last year on heavy ground so this testing ground will not be a concern for him and he is weighted to win given his age allowance with an official rating of 111.

Hidden Commander beat WITHOUT CONVICTION (best priced at 5/2) at Kelso a month ago but the latter is expected to reverse that form with a 1lb swing with the Lucinda Russell stable currently in fine form. The eight-year-old won over this course and distance on heavy ground in December 2021 off a mark of 97 before winning easily by 6 ½ lengths at Ayr over 3 miles on good ground in March off a mark of 94.

This mark of 103 will make things more difficult for Without Conviction but she should relish the conditions and looks the one to beat.
