Narrowly defeated last time out at Fontwell in May, ROYAL LAKE is taken to gain compensation on his first start for new connections. The seven-year-old ended last season in a consistent vein of form and he gets the vote ahead of Fortunate Fred, who has not been out of the first four in his last five starts. Boleyn Boy has the potential to improve for stepping up in distance and cannot be ruled out.

Placed on each of his three starts in bumpers, including last time out at Wetherby in March, DOC MCCOY sets a decent standard on form, and he is taken to get off the mark on his first go over the smaller obstacles. A winner here on his penultimate start last December and now in the hands of a new stable, Billy Boi Blue must enter calculations, along with Worcester second Onewaywest.

Tango Echo Charlie has winning form over fences after scoring at Fontwell in August and although pulled up at Southwell earlier this month, he could bounce back to form and get involved. Storminhome is interesting despite top-weight, and if he can repeat his hurdling form over the larger obstacles he can go close, but a chance is taken on SPORTING ACE. A touch frustrating over hurdles, with just one win but seven places, his pedigree suggests he can come into his own over fences for trainer Neil King.

Odin's Quest may have pulled up last time out but he is the only course winner in the field and has also won twice over the trip, once here in a bumper and at Wincanton over hurdles. The five-year-old can go well but if IOLAOS DU MOU improves for his recent Fontwell second, he could be the one. Still a maiden over hurdles, he races off a mark of 104 which the Henderson yard may exploit here. First Quest might follow them home, with the return to two miles seemingly in his favour.

GENERAL MEDRANO was a nine-length victor at Uttoxeter earlier in the month and he was given a 7lb rise for that display which, given the manner of the success, could prove to be lenient. In The Air makes his chase debut after being tough in the finish to score by a neck at Fontwell in May over the smaller obstacles, so he is well worthy of consideration. Of the remainder, Generous Day makes the most appeal.

LOOKING AS YOU ARE has been denied by a half-length into second on both of her bumper starts thus far and she could continue to improve, which makes her the one to beat in this contest. The main threat might be Woolberry, who was sent off favourite on her racecourse bow at Southwell, while Batwomen was a fair fifth at Huntingdon in February and is another to note.
