With the Cheltenham Festival just over a week away, we’ve looked at the five races in which a Gordon Elliott-trainer horse could end up in the winner's enclosure.
Thursday 16:50
Grade 2 Mares’ Novices Hurdle
Elliott’s best chance of a winner at the festival according to the bookies comes in Thursday’s Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.
Brighterdaysahead is the current bookies favourite at best odds of 13/8 for success in this race. The betting trends on Oddschecker suggest it will be a two-way battle between Brighterdaysahead and Willie Mullins’ Jade De Grudgy (9/4 second favourite).
In 2024, 34% of bets on this race on Oddschecker have backed Brighterdaysahead, with Jade De Grudy marginally behind with 31% of all bets.
Thursday 15:30
Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle
Teahupoo (3/1) and Irish Point (7/2) in Thursday’s Stayers’ Hurdle represent Elliott’s best chance of achieving a Grade 1 prize at this year’s festival.
These two horses are currently ranked as first and second favourites in the betting to win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles for Elliott (Sire Du Berlais @ 33/1 in 2023).
As well as being the betting favourites, they are the most popular bets on Oddschecker in 2024 for the Stayers: Teahupoo with 15% of all bets and Irish Point with 13%.
Wednesday 16:10
Glenfarcas Cross Country Handicap Chase
Gordon Elliott has completely dominated this race in recent memory, winning five of the previous seven editions of this race with Tiger Roll and Delta Work. Elliott will be confident of making it six wins in eight as his horses currently occupy second, third, and fourth favourites in the betting.
Delta Work at 7/2 is the most likely of the trio according to the bookmakers, with Coko Beach and Conflated joint at odds of 9/2.
Henry de Bromhead’s Minella Indo is the favourite in the betting at 2/1 and has also taken the most bets so far in 2024 with 40% of all placed through Oddschecker.
Out of the three Gordon Elliott entries aforementioned, Delta Work is the most popular bet with us in 2024, taking 15.2% of total bets.
Wednesday 17:30
Grade 1 Champion Bumper
The second race in which Gordon Elliott trains a Grade 1 favourite comes in the Champion Bumper. Jalon D’Oudairies currently stands as the joint 6/1 favourite alongside W Mullins’ Jasmin De Vaux.
Jalon D’Oudairies comes into this race off two wins in December at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown and could give Elliott a first win in the Bumper since Love Envoi in 2019.
Over the past 30 days, Jalon D’Oudairies has been the most popular Bumper bet on Oddschecker, taking 17% of bets.
Elliott also has Romeo Coolio entered in this race, currently valued as a 9/1 third-favourite.
Tuesday 14:10
Grade 1 Arkle Chase
Gordon Elliott is searching for his first-ever win in the Arkle Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival and this year has the third favourite in the betting.
Found A Fifty is currently best odds of 6/1 for Arkle Chase success, trailing Marine Nationale (9/4) and Il Etait Temps (5/1) with the bookmakers.
Marine Nationale is the most popular selection with Oddschecker punters, taking 32% of bets in 2024, with Found A Fifty taking only 8%.
