Steve Ryder is back with four tips from Saturday's horse racing action.
13:10 Newmarket
The Charlie Appleby trained STAR GUEST (best priced at 9/4) is unbeaten over this distance of 6f in her career and should be able to cope with this step up in class. The well-bred daughter of Dubawi finished a close 2nd over a mile here on her reappearance before winning twice on the July course over 6f by 3 ½ lengths and 1 ¼ lengths in handicaps.
With a rating of 93 Star Guest does have a few pounds to find on ratings with the likes of Unequal Love and Funny Story but she looks extremely progressive and should prove hard to beat if coping with her return from a 288 day break.

It will be a big day for Richard Hannon with both Rosallion and Haatem in the 2000 Guineas and hopefully MUMS TIPPLE (best priced at 10/1) can provide them with a confidence boosting success in this competitive handicap. The seven-year-old was an eyecatcher on his reappearance at Lingfield over this trip of 6f before finishing a head 2nd behind Mount Athos at Kempton last time off a mark of 102.
Mums Tipple gets to run here off a 5lb lower mark on turf and that rating of 97 is 3lbs lower than when 4th beaten only 1 ½ lengths in the Wokingham handicap at Royal Ascot last season. He was a three length winner on the July course in 2022 so he handles the track and he should run well under Ryan Moore who has a good record on him.
15:20 Goodwood
Tom Marquand gave SUMO SAM (best priced at 13/8) an enterprising front running ride to win over this course and distance in the Lillie Langtry Stakes last season and connections have booked his wife Hollie Doyle to hopefully repeat those tactics in this race. Following her 25/1 success, she followed up at Doncaster on her next start before finishing down the field at Longchamp in a Group 1 on her final start last season.
Both victories of Sumo Sam last season came on heavy and soft ground so she clearly relishes these conditions and she should prove hard to beat if coping with this drop in drip to 1m4f on her reappearance.
16:50 Punchestown
Both Dancing City and Il Etait Temps proved that running at the Dublin Racing Festival, Cheltenham Festival and Aintree won’t hinder a horses chance at Punchestown but BOTTLER’SECRET (best priced at 11/4) is preferred to the Willie Mullins trained favourite Kargese. Gavin Cromwell has won this week with Sixandahalf, Backtonormal and Brides Hill and this four-year-old bids to extend his unbeaten record over hurdles.
An unexposed two-time winner on the flat, Bottler’secret won by 11 lengths on his hurdling debut at Naas before following up at Fairyhouse in a Grade 2 in impressive style by 3 ¾ lengths in first time cheekpieces. The handicapper has given him a rating of 143 which makes him top rated and despite Kargese getting a sex allowance, I do expect him to remain unbeaten over hurdles and reward connections for targeting this specific race.
