CLUB MANAGER (NAP) (best price 9-4) could never land a meaningful blow in a 24-strong field at the Festival a month ago but he did more than enough to retain the faith that he could still turn out to be a well handicapped horse for this time of year and, in what appears a less taxing affair on paper, Gavin Cromwell’s gelding can back up that theory and provide his in-form yard another winner.

Lining up towards the outside at the Kildare venue, a slow beginning compounded matters for the son of Nathaniel and by the time the field had turned away from the stands, he was already in a position that looked a forlorn one – certainly in terms of winning.

Still with only two behind him at the second last, he did, however, make up a huge amount of ground from that juncture to at least walk away with some degree of respectability and shaping like he might be better served by further, he gets a crucial extra half a mile to increase his prospects on his return visit.

ARDBRACCAN (best price 8-1) never got any chance to express herself at Beverley last time out but now returning to the scene of her previous impressive victory, Michael Appleby’s inmate has a fine chance to put matters right over a trip that should see her to best advantage.

Slightly awkward from the gates at the Yorkshire track, she was immediately reined back from her position of the outside to get some early cover but in doing so, she not only forfeited plenty of ground she could ill afford to lose, but she also ran the risk of meeting trouble in running once straightening up for home. True to form, that scenario predictably played out for the daughter of Lawman and she ended up finishing hard on the bridle over towards the far side fence, just on the coat tails of the main players.

Leaving the impression, she may have gone close to winning with a better rub of the green, the five-year-old now gets to play a home fixture at a venue where she hit the ball out of the park on the figures previously and given the way she hit the line 15 days ago, today’s extra two furlongs certainly won’t go amiss.

PLANET LEGEND (best price 10-3) was agonisingly denied victory at Ludlow last time out but at least it was a performance that indicated he is worth keeping at three miles for the foreseeable future and despite being up against the in-form form Mole Court reverting to hurdles, he is fancied to make amends in this similar race.

Having seemingly been treading water over the minimum trip for some time, connections decided drastic measures were needed to revive the chestnut gelding’s fortunes and, on the evidence available from the Shropshire track, it was a choice that paid off.

Noted going as well as anything turning for home, it looked for all the world he was going to claim the prize once getting his head in front after the last but unfortunately the fast-finishing Porter In The Park had his own ideas and picked his pocket close home.

Difficult to swallow that defeat might have been, the data from the race in question and subsequent form of the likes of the winner and seventh-placed Face D’Music suggest the form is very good for the grade and providing he can perform to a similar level 27 days on, Dr Newland & Jamie Insole’s inmate can continue the solid run of results for the stable.

CONQUER THE BREEZE (best price 12-1) comes across as a work in progress but despite still being a little wet behind the ears, he ran well enough over today’s course last time to suggest there are races to be won with him in due course and with a step up in trip one of the factors that mighty help him realise those aspirations, Maurice Barnes’ gelding can reward each-way support.

The way he travelled here last time suggested he’d come on considerably for the 178-day break since disappointing at Musselburgh back in November and in any case, he was up against a horse in the shape of Wilful who was rated 20lb his superior.

Timewise, he ran to a decent number for a race of its kind and with the experience of racing over today’s stiff track hopefully not lost on him, the ready-made chaser can prove to be the surprise package in the field.
