Despite racing from 2lbs “wrong” at the weights under a 5lb penalty, KELPIE GREY (best priced at 3/1) should hold strong claims of completing a four-timer this season. The Jim Goldie trained four-year-old is a two-time course winner over 7f here but he did win over a mile on his reappearance at Musselburgh off a mark of 67. He followed up on his next start by 2 ¼ lengths off a mark of 72 before winning over 7f here by ¾ length off a mark of 78.

The handicapper has raised Kelpie Grey 3lbs for that victory up to a mark of 81 so this 5lb penalty will make things difficult but he was probably value for than the winning margin suggested last time. Paul Mulrennan is once again on board and I expect him to prove hard to beat.

This looks a weak 0-75 handicap so a chance is taken on SIXCOR (best priced at 13/2) who gets to run here carrying only 8-5 off a mark of 57. The Linda Perratt trained six-year-old is a three-time course and distance winner in his career including off this mark in August 2022. He once again won off this mark at Wolverhampton in November before placing over this course and distance on his reappearance when beaten only a length off this mark.

Sixcor was only beaten 1 ¾ lengths off this mark last time at Hamilton and he looks sure to be involved in the finish once again with up to four places available.

This looks a competitive 0-80 handicap but AYR POET (best priced at 20/1) looks overpriced back at this venue. The Jim Goldie trained nine-year-old is a five-time course winner with a further twelve placed efforts in his career and he proved at the end of last season that a mark of 68 shouldn’t prove beyond him. He ended last season with a 2nd placed finish over this course and distance in October off a mark of 68 when beaten only ½ length before finishing 3rd and 5th at Newcastle (0-6 on the AW) on his final two starts last season.

Ayr Poet hasn’t won fresh in the past but he was only beaten 2 ½ lengths on his reappearance last season and as a result you are getting a bigger price than expected. Mark Winn takes off a handy 3lbs and he should outrun his odds.
