Commonwealth Cup

The market for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot has changed complexion since the defeat of short priced favourite Vandeek in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock and the horse who looks the most likely to capitalise is ELITE STATUS (best priced at 7/1 on William Hill).

A three-length winner on his debut last season, he followed up that victory with a five-length demolition in the National Stakes at Sandown.

Sent off 7/4 favourite for the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last season, he ran well to finish 3rd beaten only 1 ¾ lengths before winning at Deauville on soft ground in the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg on his first attempt over 6f.

The Karl Burke trained colt disappointed on his final two starts last season behind Vandeek in the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes but returned from a 231-day break to win in impressive style at Newbury in the listed Carnarvon Stakes.

Conceding race fitness to both Relief Rally and Adaay In Devon, he eased clear to win by 2 ¾ lengths on good ground.

The handicapper has raised him 9lb up to a rating of 111 following that performance which puts him in the mix for this race and he has a lot less question marks than some of his rivals.

Vandeek has to prove that he has trained on from two to three following his below par effort last time and River Tiber could drop in trip following his 3rd placed finish in the Irish 2000 Guineas but he could also head to the Jersey Stakes over 7f instead.

Bucanero Fuerte defied a drift to make a winning reappearance at Naas in the Lacken Stakes and brings in form from the meeting last season with a 3rd placed finish in the Coventry Stakes but Elite Status impressed me more with his reappearance victory and looks worth backing at current odds.
