GREAT BEAR just lost out by the narrowest of margins at Punchestown last time out and today’s contest looks the ideal opportunity for him to put matters right. 

The combination of a slow jump four out and edging out to his right at the last ultimately cost him the race at the Kildare venue, but nevertheless, he still managed to post a smart speed figure in defeat and if repeated, it’s a performance a level or two ahead of today’s opposition on recent evidence.

The experiment to try GIBBS ISLAND (best price 7-1) over 1m5f at Down Royal last time didn’t quite work out but at the same time, he did more than enough to suggest he is worth keeping on side and now back over his optimum trip, it’s time to implement that belief. 

A little keener than ideal in the early stages at the Co Down venue, the possibility of Andrew Oliver’s inmate staying his first attempt beyond 1m2f diminished as a result, and true to form, he ended up not quite seeing the race out as well as several who came through strongly from the back of the field. 

Even so, he still posted decent speed figure in defeat and if you dovetail that effort alongside the performances behind the useful Old Faithful on his two previous outings, the son of Iffraaj has reasonably decent prospects of making an impact dropping back down three furlongs.
