Steve Ryder is back with three tips for today's horse racing action
14:40 Haydock
Secret Mistral won comfortably by two lengths here a month ago off a mark of 65 and despite a 7lb rise from the handicapper, she should hold strong claims with Jack Doughty retaining the ride in this apprentice handicap.
20:10 Kempton
Stanley Spencer has been well backed overnight but he could struggle against top weight HEATHCLIFF (best priced at 9/2) who won here on his handicap debut in April. The James Fanshawe trained three-year-old returned from a break and a gelding operation to win over 7f here on his handicap debut when fitted with a first-time hood. He beat Old Chums by a short head that day who has won since and is now rated 8lbs higher so he looks well handicapped off only a 3lb higher mark.
Heathcliff now drops down to 6f without a hood in the hope that he will settle better at the stronger pace and if Callum Shepherd can get a good position from Stall 10 then he looks sure to be involved in the finish with four places on offer.
21:00 Newbury
This looks a competitive 0-70 handicap to conclude the card at Newbury but preference goes to NEW KINGS ROAD (best priced at 11/4) who runs here from 3lbs “well in” at the weights. The Richard Hannon trained three-year-old has shown improvement since returning from a gelding operation and a switch to handicaps with form figures of 313.
He won by 1 ½ lengths at Salisbury off a mark of 62 before finishing only ½ lengths when 3rd behind the progressive Lennon at Pontefract last time under a 6lb penalty.
The handicapper has raised New Kings Road up to a mark of 70 following that run but he instead runs here off a mark of 67 meaning that he is 3lbs “well in” at the weights. With Sean Levey back on board, he should hold strong claims of recording a second career victory.
