Ombudsman was an impressive debut at Newmarket a month ago in a race that is working out well but it may prove difficult conceding 7lbs to CLOCKMAKER (best priced at 15/2) who has finished behind two smart prospects on his two starts this season.

The David Simcock trained gelding finished 2nd behind the ill-fated Hidden Law at Newbury on his debut before slightly disappointing at Yarmouth last time behind Theory Tides when racing too keenly in the early stages.

Connections now fit Clockmaker with a first time hood which should make the job of Jamie Spencer easier and he looks the biggest danger should the favourite disappoint.

Course and distance winner Bletchley Storm is respected under a 5lb penalty but a chance is taken on FUN LOVING (best priced at 5/1) on her handicap debut.

The Ralph Beckett trained three-year-old was sent off 4/5 for her debut last season when only 4th before finishing down the field on her reappearance at Windsor.

She stepped forward markedly from that effort to finish 3rd at Salisbury three weeks ago and now makes her handicap debut off an opening mark of 74.

Fun Loving is now fitted with first time cheekpieces in this race and she should run well with the dead eight runners.

Both Miss Information and GUITEAU (best priced at 3/1) are “well in” at the weights in this race but preference goes to the latter whose victory last time came over this course and distance.

The Dominic French Davis trained four-year-old has a good record at the track with a neck 2nd last year and a 4 ½ length victory on good to soft ground last time.

Guiteau won that handicap in impressive style off a mark of 63 and he gets to run here under a 5lb penalty rather than off his revised mark of 72. That means he is 4lbs “well in” at the weights and is much better drawn than his main rival in Stall 1.

Guiteau 3/1 (1pt)
