There are some extremely well bred newcomers in this race including Ballet Slippers but connections of RED LETTER (best priced at 10/11) will be disappointed if she couldn’t make her experience tell in this race and get off the mark at the second attempt. The Ger Lyons trained filly was sent off a well backed 5/2 joint favourite for her debut over this course and distance a month ago where she finished 2nd by a head.

Red Letter didn’t get the clearest of passages that day under Colin Keane before making a strong challenge entering the final furlong. The pair pulled 3 ¾ lengths clear of the third that day and even a repeat of that effort could be good enough to win this.

The Kevin Ryan trained BORDERLINE BOSS (best priced at 10/3) finished a close 2nd on his handicap debut a month ago and he should hold strong claims off the same mark. The Harry Angel gelding raced over 7f in his first three career starts before connections dropped him in trip to 6f for his handicap debut where he stayed on strongly to finish 2nd by ½ length in first time cheekpieces.

This step back up in trip to 7f should suit Borderline Boss and he should prove hard to beat with Tom Eaves taking back over on board in this race off top weight.

15:35 Newton-Abbot

This looks a competitive 0-110 handicap but preference goes to SAINT BIBIANA (best priced at 3/1) who bids for a four-timer. The Georgie Nicholls seven-year-old has flourished since being upped to staying trips in May where she has been unbeaten over distances over 3 miles. She won by three lengths at Stratford off a mark of 95 before following up at Newton Abbot by 1 ¾ lengths off a mark of 101.

Saint Bibiana showed a good attitude to win by a neck at Cartmel at the end of June off a mark of 105 and the handicapper has only raised her 4lbs for that victory. The return to Newton Abbot should suit her and she is expected to prove hard to beat with regular rider Lorcan Williams back on board.
