Al Qareem, 1pt WIN, 2/1

Karl Burke’s AL QAREEM (best price 2/1) must have an excellent chance of repeating last year’s success in this race. He gave weight and a beating to the 117-rated Bluestocking twelve months ago and will face no rival of that one’s calibre this time around.

He’s already finished runner-up in three competitive Group 3s this year and is undoubtedly the best horse in the race. With the best form on offer and dropping down in class, he should be primed to repeat the dose for his in-form handler.

Goobinator, 1pt WIN, 16/1

The Watergate Cup has an extremely competitive look to it, with plenty to consider, but the one I’m most interested in is Donald McCain’s GOOBINATOR (best price 16/1), who will handle conditions and can compete off a really nice mark.

His connections have enjoyed some fine success at this course over the years, particularly with Overturn once upon a time, and their eight-year-old sneaks into this race off a low weight. It seems like this race has been a bit of a plan.

He’s only 1lb higher than when he scored at Catterick under identical conditions back in October and shaped encouragingly when staying on to finish fifth of 13 at Haydock last time out. I think he holds a much stronger chance than his odds suggest.
