Bennetot, 0.5 pts E/W, 11/1

BENNETOT (best price 11/1) has raised his game to a large extent in the second half of this year and comes into this race on the back of an excellent fourth in the Cambridgeshire Handicap.

He did well to finish as close as he did, keeping on strongly in the closing stages, and the assessor has only raised his mark 1lb. I am convinced he would have finished a clear second with a clear run.

The eventual winner Liberty Lane was always prominent and already set sail for home when this five-year-old had to wait for a gap to appear. Once in the clear, though, he finished with a flourish to be nearest the finish.

This weekend’s conditions are set to be quite similar, and Danny Tudhope is reunited with him, too. With more to come and his handicap mark remaining on the lenient side, David O’Meara’s charge seems massively overpriced.

Malc, 0.5 pts E/W, 14/1

Despite such a large field going to post for The Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap, I’m really keen on backing MALC (best price 14/1), who has the ability to go close on handicap debut.

Richard Fahey’s three-year-old backed up his winning debut with an excellent second in last season’s Group 2 Norfolk Stakes and caught the eye on his final start with a fourth-place finish in the Flying Childers Stakes.

His return fourth behind Elite Status in a Listed contest reads well, and this is far easier than the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup he contested last time out. Down in grade, with conditions holding no fears, he ticks all of the boxes.
