UK Horse Racing Tips: Newbury

BREAK MY SOUL may have disappointed when taking a keen hold at Ascot last time out, but she is better judged on her penultimate effort when narrowly touched off over the same track and trip. A progressive sort last season, the five-year-old remains with plenty of potential and she may have too much for Sunset Marquesa, who makes her handicap debut on the back of an easy success at Wincanton last month. Both arriving here on a hat-trick, Asian Spice and Tour Ovalie are leading contenders as well.

La Marquise is penalised for winning at Ludlow on her hurdling bow, but she should have more to offer and has to enter calculations. Koapey finished a respectable second at Ffios Las and is likely to prove competitive once again, while WOTTER TROTTER is another expected to improve. The four-year-old finished a promising fourth over hurdles at Huntingdon on his racecourse debut, despite being hampered in the early stages, and Dan Skelton's charge can show the benefit of that experience to feature in the finish here. The newcomer Akimos is worthy of a market check.

It could pay to stick with the progressive SKYCUTTER, despite a 5lb rise for his recent success at Warwick. He made every yard to win with plenty left in the tank and there looks more to come on only his fourth start over fences. The Good Doctor never looked like catching the selection when second that day, but it was a respectable effort nonetheless and he can make his presence felt once again. The Famous Five showed promise when third at Windsor on his chasing bow and he is another to consider.

GO TO WAR found one too good at Huntingdon on his handicap debut and first start for Nicky Henderson. He had a subsequent winner back in fourth on that occasion and has scope for further improvement over this longer distance. Mr Bramley returned to action with a victory at Wetherby and is progressing well over timber, while Mr Hope Street is another on the upgrade, though has been raised a further 8lb after scoring at Warwick. Rightsotom and Welsh Charger are others capable of getting involved in an open affair.

In what looks an open affair, HOE JOLY SMOKE gets the tentative vote. Dan Skelton's charge stripped fitter for a satisfactory second over 2m4f at Uttoxeter on his seasonal reappearance when fairly bolting up over 3m at Sandown recently and, upped 7lb, this upwardly mobile staying chaser could go in again. Henry's Friend lost little in defeat when fifth in the Coral Gold Cup over C&D last month and, eased 1lb, a bold bid for the gold medal would come as no surprise. Brave Kingdom and Surrey Quest are a couple of others to consider.

Paul Nicholls bids for a fifth consecutive victory in this race with dual course winner Regent's Stroll, who supplemented his bumper success from last spring on his hurdling debut last month. He did well to recover from a bad mistake at the second-last obstacle and the six-year-old will need to have ironed out those errors to stop THE NEW LION. Impressive at Chepstow when beating a subsequent winner, the son of Kayf Tara won under a penalty over C&D last month and may prove himself to be one of England's leading novice hurdle prospects. Bill Joyce won well at Sandown in Grade 2 company and is likely to enter calculations.

INTHEWATERSIDE has the potential to be a lot better over the larger obstacles and Paul Nicholls' gelding is entitled to have benefited from his return here when third over hurdles. Shanagh Bob was disappointing on his chasing bow at Uttoxeter but is given another chance to showcase his potential, while the hat-trick seeking Menaggio bids to maintain his unbeaten record over the larger obstacles.
