Steve Ryder kicks off the new year with three selections covering Cheltenham and Southwell.
13:30 Cheltenham
Both Our Power and Cloudy Glen need to back up good runs on their reappearances so this looks a golden opportunity for BROADWAY BOY (best priced at 10/11) to get back to winning ways. The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained seven-year-old has a superb record at Cheltenham in his career including two victories last season as a novice chaser.
Broadway Boy made a mistake at the fourth last fence which put him on the back foot then 2nd in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury last time and the form of that race has been boosted by the third Victtorino winning on his next start. Off only a 2lb higher mark, he should prove extremely hard to beat.
14:49 Southwell
The market drift on ANYHARMINASKING (best priced at 16/1) is a slight concern but with eight runners he does look worth taking a chance each way at the prices. The Jonjo & AJ O’Neill trained eight-year-old ran a race full of promise on his reappearance when 3rd beaten only three lengths by subsequent listed winner Wyenot before disappointing at both Newbury and Cheltenham on his next starts.
Anyharminasking now drops into this Class 3 0-130 handicap for the first time since winning by five lengths in a similar contest in January 2022 off a mark of 127. Jack Hogan also takes off a handy 3lbs and he should be involved in the finish.
15:15 Cheltenham
This looks a really competitive renewal of the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle but preference goes to LUCKY PLACE (best priced at 7/2) who can confirm Ascot form with Golden Ace. The six-year-old was one of very few Nicky Henderson horses who ran well at the festival last season when 4th behind Langer Dan in the Coral Cup and he made a winning reappearance in the Grade 2 Ascot hurdle when the re-opposing Golden Ace was 4th and Thunder Rock was pulled up.
Golden Ace gets a swing in the weights with Lucky Place here but I still have doubts around her at this intermediate trip. Salver ran well in the Triumph Hurdle and looks as if he will appreciate this step up in distance and it will be interesting to see if Langer Dan bounces back to form in this race or whether he does in fact only show his form in the spring. The horse with least doubts is Lucky Place and he looks the most likely winner of this contest to me.
