Steve Ryder runs through the key races on 17th February and names his best bets for the day.

There is jumps racing at Carlisle and Southwell on Monday 17th February while Wolverhampton stages an all-weather meeting this evening.

Today’s Best Bets from Steve Ryder

The market prefers the chances of the unexposed Joltin N Jiving but with an official rating of 125, PIGEON HOUSE (best priced at 11/4) sets the standard. The five-year-old is a two-time winner over hurdles when trained by Jessie Harrington but has run well for Jennie Candlish so far with form figures of 2225.

Pigeon House will prefer this drop back in trip can hopefully get his head back in front with the fitting of a first-time visor.

The Jennie Candlish stable remain in good form currently with a 35% strike rate and 80% RTF and REEL ROSIE (best priced at 9/2) can hopefully make a winning handicap debut. The six-year-old was a smart 76 rated flat performer for Hugo Palmer who has run with credit on her four starts over hurdles so far. She won at Sedgefield in November by four lengths before finishing 3rd on her next two starts under a penalty.

Reel Rosie now makes her handicap debut off a mark of 105 off top weight in this race. Both Mavis Pike and Lady Bobs come here off the back of a victory so the fact you can still get three places with most bookmakers despite there only being seven runners, that looks the best way to play this race.

17:00 Wolverhampton

The third and final Jennie Candlish selection of the day is PARADOXICAL (best priced at 7/2) who has been running consistently well and can hopefully cope with this drop in trip. The four-year-old had been running well, and winning, over 1m4f earlier this year before winning over 1m1½f here a week ago when fitted with first-time cheekpieces.

That was in an apprentice handicap under Warren Fentiman so Paradoxical avoids a penalty in this race and his jockey can also claim his full 7lb allowance. He can hopefully get a good early position from Stall 1 and he looks sure to be staying on strongly at the finish.
