Today’s Best Bets from Steve Ryder
BEARAWAY (best priced at 7/4) was well backed for this race last night but I do still feel he is the most likely winner and is still slight value in this field. The once 83 rated seven-year-old has re-found his form since joining Simon Pearce with form figures of 121 including a victory over this course and distance in December.
The handicapper has raised Bearaway 2lbs up to a mark of 70 for his latest one length success at Wolverhampton which is fair and most importantly, he now gets the assistance of Sean D Bowen in this apprentice handicap which is a huge positive.
14:13 Newbury
Chad Bament looks great value for his 7lb claim over hurdles with an 18% strike rate over hurdles in his career so his presence on board KING OF THE LAKE (best priced at 2/1) is a huge positive in this conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle. The Jeremy Scott trained seven-year-old had uninspiring form figures of 877 this season before winning by 26 lengths last time on his first start after a wind operation.
An 11lb rise from the handicapper will make things more difficult for King Of The Lake but if he copes with this switch back to heavy ground then he should prove hard to beat.
16:40 Southwell
The Tony Carroll trained MUMAYAZ (best priced at 13/2) has a good record at Southwell in his career with form figures of 6211 including a victory on his penultimate start under Rossa Ryan. That triumph came off a mark of 70 before he was beaten only 1 ½ lengths at Wolverhampton last time under a 5lb penalty.
Mumayaz now runs here off a 2lb lower with a rating of 73 and he looks sure to be involved in the finish with Rossa Ryan taking back over on board.
18:45 Southwell
It took connections of CLIFFCAKE (best priced at 5/1) until career start number 45 to fit him with any headgear and he duly obliged in first time cheekpieces over 6f here last time. The Roy Bowring trained seven-year-old made all comfortably by 2 ½ lengths a fortnight ago off a mark of 67 and he runs here off a 6lb higher mark.
This step back up to 7f, a distance Cliffcake has won four times over, should be no negative and he can hopefully win for a ninth time under Lewis Edmunds in his career.
6:45 Southwell- Cliffcake 5/1 (1pt)
