Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy boast an excellent strike rate when teaming up here and the latter rides this course extremely well, so FORMAL gets my vote in the opener. She should improve from her comeback run and have a say in the outcome with her sights lowered.

Race 2
I was taken with the way HAVANA HURRICANE got the job done on debut at Goodwood. She overcame a slow start to win going away under hands-and-heels riding when beating Logi Bear, who won next-time-out. Her trainer and jockey claimed this race two years ago with Bobsleigh.

Race 3
The Coronation Cup can go the way of French raider CALANDAGAN. He has finished second in three consecutive Group 1s and was doing his best work at the end of the Sheema Classic last time out over this distance. This is a great opportunity for him to one place better.
15:00 Thirsk
Race 4
An extremely competitive race with a tentative vote going to SUGAR BABY. She posted the highest rating of these last time out when narrowly denied at Redcar in a stronger event and is worth an experiment over this distance.
15:15 Epsom
Race 5
The Richard Fahey-trained ECUREUIL SECRET has already placed in Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races in just six career starts and came close to winning on stable debut in France last time out. He’s drawn wide on his return, but could be well handicapped off 103, and could get involved.

Race 6
ELWATEEN represents a stable who does well when targeting certain races and she shaped so well when fourth in the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal debut on just her second start. She is expected to have taken a major step forward and should relish the step up in distance, so there’s a lot to like about her credentials.

David O’Meara’s MIRSKY has been dealt stall one and was a game winner at Thirsk when last seen. His trainer has an excellent record in handicaps at this venue and Oisin Murphy, who does really well around here, takes the ride. I think he has a big chance from a low weight and fair mark.
