Architect Tips has three selections in the feature race of the day at Newcastle, the Northumberland Plate.
15:15 Newcastle
SPIRIT MIXER (best price 25/1) looks ridiculously overpriced as he bids to make it third time lucky in the Northumberland Plate.
He came within half a length when second in the 2022 renewal off a mark of 97, only finding Trueshan too good, and finished ninth in last year’s race off a mark of 91.
His finishing position didn’t give a true reflection of his performance, as he was denied a clear run at the worst possible time, and basically finished in his own time.
The seven-year-old has remained in good form since, winning twice, and following a creditable seventh in the Chester Cup on his penultimate start, he ran really well when second to a course specialist at Goodwood last time out.
Back on this surface off an unchanged mark of 89, Andrew Balding’s charge must be considered as an each-way player with five places generally available.
GOLDEN RULES (best price 8/1) is another with valuable experience in this race having finished second in the 2023 renewal off a 4lb higher figure.
I think he would have won that renewal with a clear run and both the first and third are very good stayers. He had also finished fourth in the 2021 Ascot Stakes off a 3lb higher mark and is down to 90.
He shaped as though he retained most of his ability when fourth at Kempton last month after a long time off the track and should be much fitter now.
He is very lightly-raced raced for his age, he is drawn well and has a good jockey on his back off a low weight. Solid each-way claim with five places widely available.
If you like Who’s Glen, then why not consider DANCING IN PARIS (best price 11/1). He won three times last season and will arrive into this race on the back of two solid in-the-frame efforts.
He came close to beating French Master at Goodwood last month when third (three-way photo) and the winner has boosted the form by defying a mark of 100 at Royal Ascot.
Ian Williams’ charge has only been raised a couple of pounds and even gave 12lb a beating to Who’s Glen when last successful. In this race, he is miraculously 16lb better off this time, so he could run really well.
