Steve Ryder has a 10/1 play in next week’s Bunbury Cup at Newmarket.
Bunbury Cup - July Festival
The Bunbury Cup is one of the more popular handicaps run during the UK flat season and it is named in honour of Sir Charles Bunbury who was Senior Steward at the Jockey Club and introduced both of the classics held at Newmarket.
Bunbury Cup Winners, Trends & Stats
The race has been won on multiple occasions previously with Mine winning in 2002, 2005 and 2006. More recently Motakhayyel won this race in consecutive years in 2020 and 2021. Connections of Aalto will be hoping that he can do the same this year.
- 11 of the previous 12 winners were aged between four and six
- 11 of the previous 12 winners were beaten last time out
- 10 of the previous 12 winners had at least one previous run at Newmarket
- Nine of the previous 12 winners were rated between 98 and 101
- Eight of the previous 12 winners had at least two previous wins over 7 furlongs
Bunbury Cup Trainers & Jockeys To Watch
Richard Fahey has won this race three times recently with Brae Hill (2011), Heavens Guest (2014) and Rene Mathis (2015) and Richard Hannon also won this twice with Motakhayyel (2020 and 2021).
Other than Frankie Dettori, the only other jockey to win this race on multiple occasions is Ryan Moore who won this on Bonnie Brae in 2012 and Biggles in 2023.
Bunbury Cup Newmarket Tips
The Harry Charlton trained TEN POUNDS (best priced at 10/1) was an impressive winner over 7f at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile course on his reappearance this season and he ran with credit at Royal Ascot last time finishing 3rd beaten only half a length in the Wokingham Handicap when dropped to 6f for the first time.
Those two superb efforts are sandwiched by a poor effort at Ascot in the Victoria Cup when he uncharacteristically got upset in the stalls and raced keenly as a result in the early stages of the race.
The handicapper has raised Ten Pounds 2lbs up to a mark of 104 for this race but he instead runs in it 2lbs “well in” at the weights and he should relish this step back up in trip.
Ten Pounds hits four of the main five trends for the race and only misses out on the ratings trend by 1lb so he should hold strong claims in an open renewal.
