Stewards’ Cup Runners Guide
Elmonjed
Progressive four-year-old who has won five of his previous eleven starts. He won at York over 6f last time by a neck off a mark of 97 in a first-time tongue tie but would run here over under a 6lb penalty which would make him 3lb “wrong” at the weights based on his revised rating of 99.
Hammer The Hammer
Three-year-old who is yet to finish out of the top 2 in his five starts this season. An impressive 4 ¼ length winner over 6f at Chester on his penultimate start off a mark of 88, he finished 2nd beaten only a length in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot over 5f at Royal Ascot.
Completely Random
Harry Charlton trained grey who won his first two starts of the season having been gelded over the winter. He has finished 5th on his previous two starts at Newbury and Ascot over 6f off this mark of 98.
Double Rush
Lightly raced three-year-old who is currently only number 60 on the list in a maximum field of 28. He won his first two starts this season at Wolverhampton and Newmarket before placing at both York and Hamilton off marks of 90.
Annaf
Mick Appleby trained six-year-old who was well beaten in this race in 2022 off a mark of 101. Bounced back from a below par run in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot to finish a neck 2nd in a Group 3 at Newcastle a week later. He was well beaten over 7f last time in a listed race at Chester and would have to run here off a lofty rating of 107 back in a handicap.
Get It
Last year’s winner off a mark of 98, he has won his previous two starts over 6f at Ascot including when beating the Bunbury Cup winner More Thunder in the Wokingham Handicap last time. He would run here off a mark of 104 but also has the option of running in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes over 5f on Friday instead.
Purosangue
Was sent off 9/2 favourite for this race last season off a mark of 101 when finishing well beaten and would run off the same mark this year. Hasn’t shown improved form this season in three starts since being gelded but returns to a track where he finished a neck 2nd to Big Evs in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes as a juvenile.
Stewards’ Cup Trainers & Jockeys To Watch
David O’Meara (Summerghand in 2020 and Aberama Gold in 2023), William Haggas (Conquest in 2008 and Rex Imperator in 2013), Charlie Hills (Magical Memory in 2015 and Khaadem in 2019) and Michael Dods (Commanche Falls in 2021 & 2022) have all won this race twice recently.
Connor Beasley is the only jockey to have won this race twice recently both on board Commanche Falls in 2021 and 2022.
Stewards’ Cup Goodwood Tips
Commanche Falls 50/1 (0.5pt ew)
COMMANCHE FALLS (best priced at 50/1) won this race in 2021 and 2022 on his only previous two runs at the track when rated 101 and 103 and he gets to run in the race off a mark of 100 this year. For the previous two years he has been rated 112 and 109 at this time of the season which has meant that he hasn’t run in the race but he looks overpriced this year off that rating.
The Michael Dods trained eight-year-old has no doubt regressed since his York listed victory in September 2023 when he achieved a rating of 113 but he ran a race full of credit when 2nd beaten only two lengths at Hamilton off this mark of 100 in June.
At huge odds and with Connor Beasley, who rode him to his two victories in this race, already jocked up on him he looks worth taking a chance on in his bid for a third win in the race.
