Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Runners Guide

1) GIAVELLOTTO (Marco Botti- Andrea Atzeni)

Won the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase in December before defeating Kalpana in the Group 3 September Stakes last at Kempton on the AW. The faster the ground the better his chance in this contest and Andrea Atzeni comes over to ride having won the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup on him in May 2023. He is well drawn in Stall 5.

2) WHITE BIRCH (John Joseph Murphy- Dylan Browne McMonagle)

Lightly raced five-year-old who won all three of his starts in 2024 including the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. Hasn’t won since returning from an injury but could be suited by this step back up in trip to 1m4f and connections will be hoping for softer ground.

3) ARROW EAGLE (Jean-Claude Rouget- Ioritz Mendizabal)

Won the Group 3 Prix d’Hedouville over this course and distance in May before following up in a Group 2 at Chantilly on his next start. Could only finish 6th in the Group 2 Prix Foy last time behind Byzantine Dream, Sosie and Los Angeles who all reoppose. Connections will have been hoping for a better draw than Stall 16.

4) SOSIE (Andre Fabre- Stephane Pasquier)

Finished 4th in this race last season before winning his first two starts this season, both at Group 1 level. The Andre Fabre trained four-year-old bounced back from a disappointing run in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown to finish 2nd behind Byzantine Dream in the Prix Foy last time. Comes out of Stall 3 which Bluestocking won from last year.

5) LOS ANGELES (Aidan O’Brien- Wayne Lordan)

Last year’s third won his first two starts this season over 1m2f including in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. Bounced back from a below par run at the Curragh to finish 4th behind Byzantine Dream in the Group 2 Prix Foy last time but he is likely to be ridden prominently to aid the chances of stablemate Minnie Hauk who appears to be stable number one. He is fitted with first-time cheekpieces.

6) BYZANTINE DREAM (Tomoyasu Sakaguchi- Oisin Murphy)

Relished the drop back in trip to 1m4f when victorious in the Prix Foy over this course and distance last time beating Sosie with Los Angeles back in 4th. Oisin Murphy, who is 2/2 on the horse, retains the ride although the horse would prefer fast ground and he is also drawn wide in Stall 15.

7) ESTRANGE (David O’Meara- Danny Tudhope)

Eyecatching grey filly who won her first two starts this season over this 1m4f at Haydock. Beaten on good to firm ground in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks by Minnie Hauk last time but connections will hope that she will finish closer than the 3 ½ length winning distance on a softer surface although she is drawn widest of all in Stall 18.

8) QUISISANA (Francis-Henri Graffard- Alexis Pouchin)

Progressive mare who has won six of her eight career starts. She is unbeaten in her three starts this season including when a 1 ¾ length winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet last time. Her two defeats have come at Longchamp but she has clearly improved since those runs.

9) KALPANA (Andrew Balding- Colin Keane)

Was the long-term antepost favourite for this race having won the Group 1 Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot at the end of last season. She is yet to win this season from four attempts but has run with credit on all of those occasions. Her chance will likely be enhanced by softer ground and first-time cheekpieces.

10) AVENTURE (Christophe Ferland- Maxime Guyon)

Consistent filly who has recent form figures of 1221121. She finished 2nd in this race last season behind Bluestocking and has won three of her four starts this year with her only defeat coming behind the gelding Calandagan. She went one place better than last year in the Prix Vermeille last time winning by 1 ½ lengths and connections will be hoping she can do the same in this race.

11) DARYZ (Francis-Henri Graffard- Mickael Barzalona)

Unraced at two but won his first four starts this season including in the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam in June. Last of 6 in the Juddmonte International but ran much better when a short head 2nd to Croix Du Nord in the Group 3 Prince d’Orange last time shaping like this step up in trip to 1m4f would suit him well.

12) LEFFARD (Jean-Claude Rouget- Cristian Demuro)

Well beaten when badly drawn in the Prix Du Jockey Club this season but bounced back with a victory in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris over this course and distance. 6th beaten 2 ¾ lengths behind Cualificar in the Group 2 Prix Niel last time, he will be hoping for a stronger pace in this contest.

13) CUALIFICAR (Andre Fabre- William Buick)

Runner-up in the Prix Du Jockey Club earlier this season and did well to win the Prix Niel last time over this course and distance last time despite not getting a clear run in the home straight. He is an improving colt who shouldn’t be discounted given his connections.

14) HOTAZHELL (Jessie Harrington- Shane Foley )

Beat Delacroix in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy last season but hasn’t won any of his four starts this term. 4th beaten 4 ¼ lengths by that rival in the Irish Champion Stakes last time, he will need to show improved form stepped up in trip to 1m4f for the first time.

15) CROIX DU NORD (Takashi Saito- Yuichi Kitamura)

Japanese raider who has won four of his five career starts. A beaten favourite in the Japanese 2000 Guineas on his reappearance, he won the Japanese Derby winner prior to beating the reopposing Daryz by a short head in the Prix d’Orange last time at this track over 1m2f. Poorly drawn in Stall 17.

16) ALOHI ALII (Hiroyasu Tanaka- Christophe Lemaire)

Beaten only his first three career starts but won the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano on his previous start when Cualificar was only 3rd.

17) MINNIE HAUK (Aidan O’Brien- Christophe Soumillon)

Unbeaten in her four starts this season with her latest three coming in Group 1 company over this trip of 1m4f. The Aidan O’Brien trained filly won the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks with her best performance coming last time on good to firm ground. She gets all of the allowances being a three-year-old filly but bids to become the first horse since Zarkava to win from Stall 1.

18) GEZORA (Francis-Henri Graffard- Tom Marquand)

Filly who has shown improved form since joining this stable this season. She won the Prix de Diane by a length in June before finishing a 2nd beaten 1 ½ lengths by Aventure in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille last time over this course and distance.

Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Tips

(Tipped Monday 29th September)

It is a wide open renewal of the Arc this year and I am willing to take two chances in the race.

AVENTURE (best priced at 9/2) has been running consistently well for over a year now finishing either 1st or 2nd in her previous seven starts. She finished 2nd behind Bluestocking in both the Prix Vermeille and this race last season and went one better in the Prix Vermeille this season beating Gezora by 1 ½ lengths in impressive style. Maxime Guyon has chosen to ride her over Sosie and she can looks to hold strong claims at the top of the market.

QUISISANA (best priced at 33/1) has won all three of her starts this season and was an impressive winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville last time over 1m2f. She hits all six of the relevant trends at the time of writing and looks a big price as a result. Trainer Francis-Henri Graffard has three contenders for the race but I feel like this filly is being overlooked given she is improving and is unbeaten so far this season.

Aventure 9/2 (1pt win)

Quisisana 33/1 (0.5pt ew)
