UK Horse Racing Tips: Downpatrick

This looks a nice opportunity for the Gavin Cromwell-trained LUKER'S TIPPLE to open his account. Runner-up on more than one occasion for his previous yard, the four-year-old shaped with plenty of promise on his stable debut when sixth in the Lartigue Hurdle at Listowel last month. Back in these calmer waters, he looks to have strong claims and, with an official rating of 118, he certainly sets a fair standard. The John McConnell-trained Black Gem stepped up on his hurdling debut to reach the frame at Kilbeggan and should be capable of progressing further. Similar comments apply to recent Gowran Park fifth Tropical Twist.

Lightly raced over hurdles, four-time Flat winner DERRY LAD is undeniably well handicapped. An eyecatching eighth of 23 on his most recent outing over flights at Leopardstown in December 2023, the gelding has moved to Emmet Mullins in the interim. Although yet to recapture his best form this season, the seven-year-old could be reignited by a switch back to jumping. Any market confidence ahead of this race should be noted. C&D maiden hurdle winner Diamond Tipp looks the main threat. Despite failing to back up that run here last time, the mare had her excuses on the day. Longstanding maiden Whispering Hopes is also not without her chance.

The subject of strong market support when third at Killarney last weekend, the locally-trained BRINGSTY can recover losses. A five-time winner on the level, the Noel Kelly-trained gelding looks well handicapped over hurdles relative to that form. Having improved on previous efforts when keeping on to reach the frame at the Kerry track, it would be no great surprise to see that progress maintained. Parkgarve had been a solid performer prior to virtually refusing and unseating his rider at the first flight at Gowran Park. If none the worse for that mishap, he can be involved. Runner-up here last month, the Dermot McLoughlin-trained Centaq is another with fair claims.

A bumper winner on his Rules debut at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting in 2022, POUR LES FILLES has obviously had some training issues since and has only run four times in the past two years or so. Narrowly denied over a shorter trip when last seen at Down Royal in January, Gordon Elliott's charge can go one better on this occasion. A respectable third over shorter at Cork last time out, Eco Pete has plenty of experience, and must enter calculations with Bold Rhyme, who hasn't shown much recently, but may be suited by the rise in distance.

HITTHEHAYSON was having his first run for Ian Donoghue when scoring in good style over 2m4f at Roscommon last week and the Jukebox Jury gelding gets the vote to follow up over this longer trip off 7lb higher. Schiehallion had previous C&D winner Georgia Celena (third) behind when runner-up over 3m at Down Royal last time out and he can uphold that form. Wild Mandate is interesting on the step up in trip, having beaten all bar Tir Og (won again since) at Sligo, while Oogum Boogum merits respect on his second to Sporting Glance at Galway last month.

THE ELECTRICAL KID was placed over hurdles and has shown plenty of promise on both starts since switching to fences this season. The lightly raced eight-year-old hails from a yard in excellent form and beat all bar better fancied stablemate Birdie Or Bust at Listowel last month. Arriving here on a hat-trick after a pair of comfortable successes over hurdles, Torquay Road must be of interest on his first start over the larger obstacles. Riding arrangements suggest Sophia Rose, a maiden hurdle winner at Sligo, is preferred of Gavin Cromwell's two runners, and she completes the shortlist.

This can go the way of SMALL TOWN HERO, who has proved an inspired acquisition, winning all three hurdle starts since joining Ian Donoghue from Christian Williams. The Jet Away gelding scored impressively at Wexford last time and hopefully can translate his good form back to fences. Toor Moon remains a maiden after 28 outings but has given cause for optimism on his latest two starts, including when runner-up at the Listowel Festival last month and now tackles fences for the first time. A determined winner over shorter at Sligo recently, Stretchemout is another to consider as he goes back up in trip.
