THE CALTONIAN – 0.5pt each-way

Best odds of 17/2 available at time of publishing.

His recent form figures are hardly inspiring but THE CALTONIAN (best priced at 10/1) looks overpriced at this track. The Linda Perratt trained six-year-old caught the eye when a never nearer 4th beaten 2 lengths here a month ago off this mark of 89 and this drop to 5f shouldn’t inconvenience him. He is a five-time winner at Newcastle in his career including over this 5f trip in January.

The Caltonian was only beaten ½ length over this course and distance in February off a mark of 93 so he is well handicapped off a mark of 89 and should run well with Paul Mulrennan taking over on board.

UNCLE SAM – 0.5pt each-way

Best odds of 15/2 available at time of publishing.

UNCLE SAM (best priced at 15/2) has a good record at Newcastle in his career with form figures of 13682 and the form of his latest effort has been boosted by the winner. The David Thompson trained gelding won over this course and distance off a mark of 54 on his final start last year for Kevin Ryan and finished 2nd here last time off a mark of 52 when Joanna Mason rode him for the first time.

Uncle Sam was beaten 3 ¾ lengths that day but the winner Teardrops followed up over this course and distance on his next start off a 7lb higher mark and is now rated another 2lbs higher. Cheekpieces are added and he looks sure to be involved in the finish.
