Edgewell looks dangerously well handicapped on his return to hurdles at Catterick this afternoon. He surged up the ratings last season after landing a hat-trick for Rebecca Menzies, climbing from 76 to a peak of 100, but a quiet spell over fences for his current yard has seen his mark ease right back down to 86. That leaves him 14lb lower than his career-high rating and 8lb below his last winning figure over timber.
The switch back to hurdles could be the catalyst. He hasn’t quite taken to chasing, often finding himself outpaced before staying on late, but that trait can be effective around a sharp track like Catterick if delivered at the right time. His run at Windsor in November, when staying on strongly into fourth, hinted that ability remains - and notably that came with Sean Bowen in the saddle.
Bowen is back aboard for the first time since, and with his stable in excellent form, a positive, well-timed ride could make all the difference. Off a reduced mark and returning to a discipline that suits him better, Edgewell looks primed to capitalise.
