Aidan O'Hara has picked out some long odds chances on Day 1 of Cheltenham Festival.
3:20 Ultima Handicap Chase
Hyland - 1pt
Best price 10/1 at the time of publishing.
Eyed - 0.5 pts EW
Best price 80/1 at the time of publishing.
It's not really like me but I’m going near the top of the market there. I’m against the 2 JP owned plot jobs here, as I think they are on high marks, and there is plenty of negatives in their form along with them both being too short in this race.
I’ve had Hyland in mind for this for a while, and looking at the final card, I’m haven't been put off in the slightest. He probably should have won last time out apart from a poor jump 2 out. I think there is a great chance that today is the day, he lives up to his full potential.
He has good course form and also wants decent ground.
I find it hard to resist a near 3-figure price if I can see any hope at all. Eded probably ran better than the result last time out, and this trip and ground will suit. He had to runs at the end of last year that put him down as a horse that might have improvement in him.
I'll add a small minimum bet at 80/1 just in case I was right. He is such a huge price because he is out of the handicap, but the type of race might just suit him
5:20 National Hunt Challenge Cup Novices' Handicap Chase
Holokea - 1pt EW
Best price 33/1 at the time of publishing.
This looks a tough race, I’m not sure that I see any future stars in this like there has been in the past. The form of Holokea’s run around here on similar ground in December has worked out exceptionally well. He got collared late on and actually battled as soon as he was passed, giving the impression there is a bit left in the tank.
That form would entitle him to be a fair bit shorted here, but he was never going last time out in Haydock.
That was only 4 weeks, ago but he was pulled up early and it shouldn’t have taken too much out of him.
He has been collared late in 2 races this year, from horse coming from miles back. I don’t think its because he is weak in the finish it looks like he battles once he’s seen them .
He is bottom weight here, with a 5 lbs claimer on and looks like the step up in trip on nice ground around here is just about perfect form him. 33/1 looks well worth a bet.
Aidan O'Hara Day 1 Trixie - 1pt
Mighty Park 7/1
Lulamba 17/10
Birghterdaysahead 5/1
Best price 128.6/1 at the time of publishing.
I always like to add in a small multiple in the races I’ll struggle to come up with a big price selection.
1:20 Mighty Park
looked highly impressive to me in his first run for Willie and he has now drifted to a decent looking price for what looks bags of potential. There isn’t a lot to go on, but this division has been waiting for something to pop its head up, particularly from the Mullins stable. I’m not much to times etc, but for a first run, it has worked out well, with a decent horse in second
2:00 Lulamba
This looks a 2-horse race, and I’ve settled on Lulamba, he is improving with each run, and I’m not sure he is as slow as we are made believe. He doesn’t need to be very close turning for home to pick up whoever is in front.
4:00 Brighterdaysahead
Look I didn’t think id be going for Brighterdaysahead here, but she has drifted to a price where she is certainly the bet. I think it may be a 2-horse race between the 2 fillies, and 5/1 is a fair bit too big. She has the best 2 miles form here, and in a poor champion, she has a few runs that would be plenty good enough here.
2:40 McCoy Contractors Juvenile Handicap Hurdle
Mino Des Mottes - 1pt EW (6)
Best price 40/1 at the time of publishing.
Were in a pretty good position with our earlier selection Quinta Do Lago advised at 33/1 and currently standing at 18/1 , so id be happy with that even though its 4 places.
I had another interesting horse in this, and it’s drifted to a huge price which must make it a bet. Mino Des Mottes, is bottom weight here, but has been improving with each run, and ran well against an older horse last time. She has been running on Heavy ground and her first run in Punchestown was pretty decent and augurs well for her improving on good ground.
That last run against Too Bossy for Us, who is running in the Supreme, just had all the hallmarks of improvement. 40/1 with 6 places is well worth a bet
4:40 Plate Handicap chase
Moon Dorange 1pt ew (6)
Best price 66/1 at the time of publishing
I have never struggled to make sense of one of these 2m5f races in Cheltenham, as much as this one today. A case can be made for a few of the bigger priced ones. After looking at everything I’m settling on my first gut feeling selection Moon Dorange at a big price.
Moon Dorange is good around here on decent ground, in these races. He is a huge price because he has been poor in his last two runs away from Cheltenham. He did catch the eye over course and distance this year, not being in the right position as it got to the business end.
These races are littered with horses who have course form getting involved at big prices, seemingly from nowhere, as it’s a very specific type of race, run 5 times a year.
He will need to jump better than he has been but if he gets into a rhythm he can get involved, of a reduced mark
1 pt ew 66/1 5 places 365 50/1 5 place generally, boyles/betway and sky have 6 places
