Supreme Novice Hurdle

Old Park Star looks a serious contender after an excellent novice campaign for Nicky Henderson. The gelding is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles this season and has looked better with each run, showing both pace and authority when stretching clear of his rivals.

His most striking performance came in the Rossington Main Novices' Hurdle at Haydock Park Racecourse, where he made all and powered away by 18 lengths, a display that suggested he possesses far more ability than the average novice. Prior to that, he also proved his liking for the track with a comfortable course-and-distance success at Cheltenham Racecourse in December.

With a perfect record over hurdles, strong form on good-to-soft ground and the partnership with Nico de Boinville boasting a 100% strike rate together, further improvement looks likely. If reproducing the level he showed at Haydock, Old Park Star has the profile of a novice capable of making a major impact here.

The Arkle

Lulamba – Arkle Chase

Lulamba looks the one to beat after an excellent start to his chasing career. The progressive five-year-old has won six of his seven career starts, with his only defeat coming by a narrow margin in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse last year.

He has taken very well to fences this season, landing three straight victories including the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury Racecourse where he brushed aside experienced rivals by over six lengths. While he can take a little time to hit top gear, he finishes his races powerfully and already brings stronger chase form than many of his rivals.

Still improving and unbeaten over fences, Lulamba has the experience and class to maintain his perfect chasing record.

Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

Glen To Glen – Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

Best Price 7/1 at the time of publishing.

Glen To Glen makes plenty of appeal in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse, particularly given the likelihood of a much stronger pace than he has encountered so far over hurdles.

Trained by Joseph O'Brien, who has built an outstanding record in this race in recent years, the four-year-old brings a useful Flat background to the table having previously achieved a solid rating on the level. That speed influence is significant in a race like this, where a truly run contest often suits horses with proven pace.

His hurdle runs to date have all come in steadily run races on heavy ground, conditions that have not been ideal for a horse with his profile. Despite that, he managed to break his maiden at Cork Racecourse last time out, finishing his race strongly after pulling early when the tempo was slow.

The switch to quicker ground, a large field and a likely strong gallop should help him settle better and allow him to use his natural speed more effectively. With the handicapper giving him a workable mark based on his overall ability, Glen To Glen looks the type who could take a sizeable step forward in a race his yard has targeted successfully before.
