Gaelic Approach could be well positioned to make a winning start to his handicap career now stepping up in distance.

The Charlie Johnston-trained three-year-old showed promise as a juvenile, most notably when finishing second at Ayr on heavy ground where he set the pace for much of the race before being beaten around five lengths. That performance suggested he has natural early speed, a trait often seen in Johnston runners who are encouraged to race prominently.

Today marks his handicap debut from a mark of 68, which could prove workable given his limited experience and scope for improvement. Since his last run he has also been gelded, a change that can often help younger horses focus and progress physically.

The move up to 1m4f is another key factor. His pedigree points strongly towards stamina — he is a half-brother to a horse that performed well over middle distances and is out of a dam whose best form came over 12 furlongs — suggesting this longer trip could unlock further improvement.

There are also positive signals in the booking of Billy Loughnane, a rider well known for getting the best out of progressive types on the all-weather. With potential improvement expected on his Tapeta debut and over a more suitable trip, Gaelic Approach looks capable of taking a step forward and making a successful handicap debut.

Legacy Rock could be poised to show significant improvement as he makes his handicap debut after a break.

The three-year-old began his career in stronger company and now drops into a much lower grade for the first time, which often provides the opportunity for a horse to show more of its ability. His latest run came over seven furlongs at Kempton where he finished sixth, but the performance was better than the bare result suggests.

On that occasion he was given a ride that appeared tactically inefficient, yet he still stayed on reasonably well late in the race. With a more positive and well-timed ride, there is every chance he could produce a more competitive effort.

The six-month break since that run could also prove beneficial, giving connections time to freshen him up and make adjustments following a gelding operation. That type of change often helps younger horses settle and improve.

The booking of Hollie Doyle adds further encouragement. She is a rider in excellent form and her presence suggests the yard may be expecting a big run.

With a drop in class, potential improvement after his break, and strong market support emerging, Legacy Rock looks capable of producing a much better performance and could take advantage of a workable mark on handicap debut.
