The handicapper left SOVEREIGN SPELL (best priced at 5/1) on his mark of 85 despite winning by 5 ½ lengths in a Wolverhampton maiden on his reappearance. That gives the Kevin Philippart De Foy trained colt a fitness advantage over all bar one rival in this contest.

Sovereign Spell finished 2nd in a 5f novice race at this course a year ago on 1000 Guineas Day showing that he handles this track and also ran well to finish 3rd on his handicap debut at Doncaster on his final start last year. He showed run well from the bottle end of the weights.

BECKFORD’S FOLLY (best priced at 8/1) bids to become the first three-year-old since 1996 to win the Abernant Stakes but he receives a handy weight-for-age allowance from his rivals. The Charlie Appleby trained gelding won all three of his starts at Newmarket last season (two at the July course) including the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes over 5f at this track.

This step back up in trip to 6f should suit Beckford’s Folly well and he should continue the good recent run of his stable who are operating at a 41% strike rate in the past fortnight which include two winners and three placed efforts from six runners at this meeting.

The John & Thady Gosden trained GUILDMASTER (best priced at 3/1) won his only start last season at Lingfield in good style stretching clear by 3 lengths when sent off a well supported 13/8 favourite under Rab Havlin. The form of that effort was boosted by the runner-up winning on his next start to add a bit of substance to the form.

Guildmaster still holds entries in the Dante Stakes and Derby later this season and he looks overpriced against his five rivals.
