EY UP HE'S A STAR caught the eye at Newcastle before hitting the frame at Thirsk a fortnight ago and the four-year-old gelding wouldn't need to find considerable improvement to get on the scoresheet. There are plenty of dangers, though, including Wrydcroft, who returned with a cosy success at Southwell last month. Previous C&D winners Pearly Squirrel and Finn Ironside warrant respect on the back of creditable all-weather performances, as does Giant.

Deported sets a fair standard with an official rating of 78 and better was clearly expected of Bunyola Bay on his debut in October, but newcomer MOREEDD might be useful. Roger Varian's colt is related to a host of smart types including the high-class Benbatl and Guineas heroine Elmalka. If inheriting even an ounce of that ability, he could be one to follow over the upcoming season. Spare a thought for fellow debutant Glen Nevis too, who fetched 240,000gns as a yearling.

Silver State shoulders a 6lb penalty for scoring at Bath last week and is dangerous to underestimate, but the gut feeling is that TOASTMASTER will have his measure. Bringing solid all-weather form to the table, he might just appreciate switching to turf and dropping back in trip. There is likely much more to come and he edges the vote. Welbury is another to consider.

ABLON showed her battling qualities at Kempton when breaking through and wasn't a surprise winner judged on a previous second at the track. Switching to turf on better ground than she encountered at Goodwood last September should be fine and stretching back out in trip should also suit. Richard Hannon's filly gets a confident vote ahead of Nanny Park and Percy's Daydream.

Bucklow Hill won on his debut at Lingfield in January and commands respect going for a double. However, this won't be easy under a penalty and THE JACKAL might represent a bit of value following an encouraging first attempt at Wolverhampton when second to a potentially smart type. King's Road Dandy is another to bear in mind, likewise Wayward Queen.

KISS FOR AN ANGEL will prove popular in the finale, and rightly so because he produced a career-best effort last time out when half-a-length second at Redcar. He was a beaten favourite that day, but it was an encouraging enough performance on his handicap bow to think he's well worth another chance now debuting as a three-year-old. The dangers are Cotton Bud and Tommo's Ginjaninja.
