6:15 Ripon

Tip 1: Masaban - 1pt

Best odds of 4/6 available at bet365 while publishing.

MASABAN (best priced at 4/6) looks the most interesting contenders here on his handicap debut starting off at this low level. The three-year-old finished midfield in two strong maidens last season won by future Group 1 and 2 winners Pierre Bonnard and Constitution River when trained by Dermot Weld before joining Ed Bethell having been gelded.

It was interesting that a horse bred for further than a mile was then dropped in trip to 6f for his stable debut on his first run for 252 days. Unsurprisingly he was outpaced in that contest and made some eyecatching late headway to finish a never nearer 6th shaping like this step up in trip back to a mile would suit well. He makes his handicap debut off a mark of 60 in this Class 6 0-60 handicap and it would be disappointing if he was beaten.

6:45 Ripon

Tip 2: Mark’s Choice - 1pt EW

Best odds of 4/1 at bet365 while publishing.

This looks a competitive 0-75 handicap but preference goes to MARK’S CHOICE (best priced at 4/1) who bids for an eleventh win at this track. The Gemma Tutty trained ten-year-old won three times last season, all in cheekpieces and all at Ripon with his four other runs coming without any headgear and three of them away from Ripon.

Mark’s Choice finished last of 15 on his reappearance at Thirsk without any headgear when an unfancied 22/1 chance but that will have no doubt been a prep run for this early season target. Cheekpieces go back on, William Pyle who rode him to win over this course and distance in September gets back on board, and he looks sure to run well back at this track.
