Horses for courses is that good old line that we hear time and time again and it holds a lot of truth but what about Trainers who tend to have more success at a particular track and why do some trainers have a significantly better win percentage at some rather than others?

I suppose it could just be habitual because as we know they can be creatures of habit so perhaps they tend to earmark the same meetings that have proved to be good stepping stones in the past. Location could also play into this with many trainers enjoying success locally and horses not having to travel as far or maybe certain courses or more specifically, the going, lend themselves better to particular training methods.

More importantly, I wanted to understand which trainers are the most successful at each and every flat venue in Britain so that I had that data to hand when looking at a potential bet but also to see if there were certain racecourse characteristics that particular trainer’s horses fared better at.

The parameters to determine which trainer was most successful at each course were these:

  1. Judged on Win Percentage
  2. Over the last 5 seasons
  3. Must have had 25 runners or more at each course

So here is a comprehensive list of every racecourse and the best performing yard at each of them*
