There is plenty of pace drawn both high and low so I am willing to take a chance on ALVIN (best priced at 16/1) despite coming out of Stall 21. The George Scott trained three-year-old has shown improved form on turf since being gelded last year and was a comfortable winner at Bath on his penultimate start by 1 ¾ lengths under Darragh Keenan.

Alvin was slowly away from Stall 11 at Chester and caught back further than ideal when 4th beaten only 1 ½ lengths. He runs here off only a 1lb higher mark and should be able to continue his progression in this race.

Tom Marquand would have had the option of riding at multiple meetings on a busy Saturday but he heads to Goodwood with EARTH SHOT (best priced at 6/5) his best chance on the card. The William Haggas trained filly finished 2nd behind stablemate My Ophelia on her debut at Newbury over a mile last season before an impressive five length success at Newmarket on her reappearance.

Connections stepped Earth Shot up to 1m2f last time and she relished that extended distance giving them hope of taking up an engagement in either the Oaks, Irish Oaks or the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot after this. She should be able to justify her short price.

The Robert Cowell trained five-year-old has won by over two lengths on both occasions including when overcoming a track bias at York last time when it appeared opportune to race on the far side of the course.

The handicapper has raised Jakajaro 8lbs for that success up to an official rating of 108 meaning that he only has 4lbs to find with main protagonists. He can make it 3/3 this season and record a first group success of his career.
