Last year’s 1-2 Persica and ICE MAX (best priced at 13/2) reoppose again this year with preference
going to the latter on softer ground. The Karl Burke trained five-year-old has won seven times in his
career with six of those coming on ground described softer than good. The gelding was only
narrowly beaten at Chester behind Coronation Cup contenders Lambourn and Bay City Roller before
finishing a close 6 th at Goodwood last time in the listed Festival Stakes.
Both of those previous two starts have come over 1m2f with Ice Max racing too keenly in the
opening stages of those races. This drop back in trip to 1m½f and the return to softer ground will suit
him well and he looks sure to run well.

A few of the leading contenders caught the eye on their previous starts but none more so than
SALLAAL (best priced at 3/1). The Roger Varian trained four-year-old was well regarded last season
winning twice prior to finishing a beaten favourite in a listed race at Leopardstown on heavy ground.
Connections of Sallaal had him gelded over the winter and he made a highly encouraging
reappearance run over this course and distance when 2 nd behind Epsom specialist Rathgar.
He was keen on his first run for 191 days that day but made some nice headway late on to finish within a
length of the winner. A 5lb higher mark will make this more difficult but he could still prove a group
horse in a handicap.
