The Mallow Handicap is the highlight of the card at Cork and I am willing to take a chance on two horses in an open renewal when bookmakers have five places widely available. Last year’s winner FORT VEGA (best priced at 13/2) runs off a 10lb higher mark than last year but deserves to following some good placed effort since.

The Sheila Lavery trained six-year-old was only beaten ½ length at the Curragh in the Scurry Handicap before finishing an eyecatching neck 2 nd behind the reopposing Headmaster at the Curragh on his reappearance. That was over 6f and he looks to hold strong claims of reversing that form back over 7f here.

It is becoming a slight concern that GLENEAGLE BAY (best priced at 8/1) hasn’t won since his debut (0-14 since) but he is another who ran well in valuable handicaps last season. The six-year-old placed in the Victoria Cup at Ascot off a mark of 92, finished 2 nd at Galway off a mark of 95 and will have found the ground too soft for him on his three starts so far this season. As a result he has dropped down from a mark of 95 to 89 in three runs this season and now returns to good ground with Colin Keane taking over on board for the first time.
