Darley Dewhurst StakesSee All Odds

The Darley Dewhurst Stakes is the champion two year old race of the season, and today's renewal is a straight fight between Ballydoyle and Godolphin. Only five runners go to post for the £500,000 Group 1 over seven furlongs on the Rowley Mile at 3pm. Charlie Appleby's unbeaten Champagne winner Desert Castle is odds on. Aidan O'Brien's Golden Fleece winner Darkness Falls has been the big market mover this week.

Dewhurst Stakes Winners, Trends & Stats

  • Favourites have won 7 of the last 10 runnings, including Chaldean as joint favourite.
  • 8 of the last 10 winners won on their previous start.
  • The best trials have been the National Stakes (4 winners), the Champagne Stakes (3) and the Middle Park (2). No winner in the last ten years had last run over a mile or more.
  • Four of the last ten winners were unbeaten, and all four were favourite.
  • Aidan O'Brien has won the race eight times, a joint record, so one more would make it his outright. Charlie Appleby has won it three times and Andrew Balding has won two of the last four.
  • Churchill and Chaldean both went on to win the 2,000 Guineas.

Dewhurst Stakes 2026 Runners Guide

Darkness Falls (Draw 5)

Aidan O'Brien's colt is the only Group 1 winner in the field. He won the Golden Fleece over a mile and a furlong at Leopardstown by four and a quarter lengths on good ground, after winning his maiden by seven lengths. Ryan Moore rides, and Ballydoyle say the Dewhurst has been on his agenda for some time. He drops back to seven furlongs for the first time. He has been backed from 7/2 on Monday into 15/8.

Desert Castle (Draw 3)

Charlie Appleby's unbeaten colt has won both his starts, including a course and distance win. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster by three lengths from Sergei Diaghilev, with Gentle Hurricane fourth. William Buick takes over in the saddle, and Appleby says he has come forward again since Doncaster. He fits the profile of recent winners, but he has had only two runs and has hung left in both.

Great Barrier Reef (Draw 1)

The Coventry winner was beaten a neck under a penalty in a Group 3 at the Curragh last time at 4/5. Wayne Lordan rides as Ballydoyle's second string. He has never run beyond six furlongs and needs to prove he stays seven.

Gentle Hurricane (Draw 4)

Andrew Balding's colt was second to Haffner in the Acomb and then fourth, almost seven lengths behind Desert Castle, in the Champagne. James Doyle rides, but he has a lot to find on that form.

Jassas (Draw 2)

Appleby's second runner won a novice at Haydock on soft ground. His trainer says he should help keep things straightforward, which suggests he is here to make the pace for Desert Castle. Billy Loughnane rides.

Dewhurst Stakes 2026 Trainer To Watch

Aidan O'Brien has won this race eight times and has two chances today. Darkness Falls has the best form in the race on the strength of his Golden Fleece win.

Dewhurst Stakes 2026 Betting Tips

The trends point to Desert Castle. He is unbeaten, comes from the Champagne Stakes and is favourite, and that profile has done well in this race. Even so, 4/5 is short for a colt who has had only two runs and beat four rivals at Doncaster.

Darkness Falls is the most accomplished horse in the field and the only one already proven at Group 1 level. He won the Golden Fleece by a wide margin on good ground, which is what he will get today. With Jassas expected to lead, the strong pace should play to his stamina. The drop back to seven furlongs is the question, but a true pace at Newmarket should suit him. At 15/8 he is the value against the favourite.

Each way terms are only two places in a five runner race, so the win bet is the way to play it.
