Trainer Dan Skelton has so far enjoyed a pretty successful weekend at Chepstow, and I think it is notable that he was won a Juvenile Hurdle, two Novice Hurdles and a Bumper. Seemingly his younger horses are in a very good place, and the latest to test that theory is OLD COAST ROAD in the concluding Bumper.
The whispers at the moment are that Dan has a really nice Bumper team, and that is evident by Dundee Law bolting up by 11 lengths at Worcester on Wednesday, before Northern Singer was an impressive winner of the Mares Bumper yesterday. It is this gelding who is attracting the most chat however, as this Crystal Ocean half-brother to Ball D’Arc, Riaan and Edene D’Arc is a nicely bred point-to-point winner.
During that point at Boulta last November he showed plenty of pace to move from the rear into a lead down to the last, and he kept on strongly to the line to beat Ar Ais Aris by 2 lengths - and that rival has since joined Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, finishing 4th on his Bumper debut. Back in third was also Merry Way who finishes a very good 4th in the Aintree Grade 2 Bumper, in a position he dead-heated with Hi Ho Idaho who is now rated 121 for Cian Collins.
OLD COAST ROAD looks a pretty shrewd private purchase then following that Boulta success, and connections have clearly given him plenty of time as he was reportedly quite mentally immature when he arrived at Lodge Hill. All his home work is good, and connections are very hopeful he will land this prize.
