With all of the Chase races at Chepstow over the weekend abandoned, there is now a fantastic replacement card at Ffos Las on Wednesday, which helps to fill in the gaps. With that in mind, here are five horses you will want to be keeping an eye on!

1. SINNATRA

The Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at 14:20 has attracted five declarations, and all eyes will be on SINNATRA for Dan Skelton. He is rated 141 following his second place in the Grade 1 Top Novices' Hurdle at the Aintree Festival in April, and prior to that run he was a good fifth in the County at Cheltenham as well. He is not a point-to-point recruit, but he is a half-brother Listed Chase winner Maria’s Benefit, so you would expect him to make up into a smart Novice this season.

Dan Skelton has said in the past that he thinks an aggressive ride over two-miles suits him well, but he could also be tried over two-and-a-half miles at some point this season.

2. POURQUOI PAS PAPA

On Wednesday it looks like it will be a good battle in this Limited Handicap for Novices' however, as Paul Nicholls also sends the commentator’s nightmare POURQOU PAS PAPA. He is an exciting 4yo to go Chasing as he finished fourth at the Cheltenham Festival and third at the Aintree Festival, but he has always been described as a Chaser.

Being a 4yo he receives a massive 9lbs allowance from his elders, meaning whilst he is rated 131, he is effectively racing here off a mark of 122. Perhaps he will want an intermediate trip in time, but he ought to be able to give Sinnatra something to think about on Wednesday.

3. CAPTAIN TEAGUE

Dan Skelton has recruited some very interesting stable switchers this season, and Johnny de la Hey sending him the majority of his string was significant news in the Spring. One of those switchers was CAPTAIN TEAGUE, who joins the yard having peaked at a rating of 142 for Paul Nicholls. It is safe to say that his career very much tailed off for his previous handler having been well beaten at Ascot before being pulled up at Aintree in April, but he now goes back Chasing having last been seen in that sphere when sent off 9/4 joint-favourite for the Grade 2 John Francombe Novices' Chase at Newbury in November 2024 - where he finished lame in fourth. Considering he is a former point-to-point winner you should imagine that Chasing will be the making of him if getting it right this time, and a mark of 133 does leave him quite dangerously handicapped.

4. TUTTI QUANTI

This Listed Novices' Chase is quite a hot contest, and TUTTI QUANTI is another Horse who connections will have high expectations for this season. He seems to be a Horse who loves soft ground having won two Premier Handicaps at Newbury last season in such conditions, with the William Hill Hurdle in February a stand-out 15 length winning performance. Unfortunately he fell in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at the end of last season when sent off the 13/8f, but it is going to be very exciting to see him over a fence on Wednesday. Considering he could be a bit of a tearaway over Hurdles it will be informative to see him over this 2m3½f trip, and if he stays then he will likely be hard to beat considering he is rated 151 - which is 12lbs+ clear of his rivals.

5. IL EST FRANCAIS

Perhaps the most fascinating recruit to Dan Skelton this season is IL EST FRANCAIS, who joins the yard from Tom George off the back off three pulled-up efforts. We know that when trained by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm in France he was a prolific Chaser, winning four times including a Grade 1 at Kempton. His second in the King George is also a career highlight, but nothing has really gone right for him since that day. Having peaked at a rating of 166 he is now down to a mark of 155, and perhaps the plan will be for that mark to keep falling before he strikes. It will be very interesting to see if they let him go forward over this two-and-a-half mile trip at Ffos Las just to see what sort of Horse they still have, but ultimately I am sure there is more of a longer term plan with him than just Wednesday. If Dan Skelton can revive his career, then it would be a huge accomplishment that would come with many rewards.
