TIP 1: BEGORRA MAN - 1pt Win

Trainer Gavin Cromwell has been back amongst the winners lately, with Simply Natural and Ole Ole both winning at Galway on Sunday. With that in mind then I think it is worth chancing BEGORRA MAN in the opener on his Chase debut, as he has always looked the type who would improve for this new sphere.

His Bumper second to Willie Millins’ Gameofinches in February 2025 reads well, but unfortunately he was met with a set-back which then kept him off course for 360 days. When returning in February this year connections were between a bit of a rock and a hard place in what to do with him, but they decided to go for another Bumper to give him a more gentle introduction, and he ran well enough for second behind Soul Asylum, despite shaping as if he needed that effort quite badly.

He went back over Hurdles in March at Navan when running in a 2m Maiden, and he travelled well that day but was very one-paced to the line behind Kilgame (127), who is a Henry de Bromhead horse with a bit more pace. Connections rounded off this 6yo’s campaign in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in April though, and this time stepped up in trip to 2m3½f I thought he looked much more at home, but he was just unable to give 2lbs to Quinta Do Lago (132) who looks a nice young Horse for the Jessie Harrington team, and may even go to Auteuil for a Grade 1 next month.

The way BEGORRA MAN jumped the last at Punchestown that day suggests to me that he will make up into a much improved Chaser, and further indicators towards that fact are that he is a half-brother to Campeador/Noahthirtytwored and a full-brother to Fingle Bridge. All are Chase winners, and hopefully this lad can follow in their footsteps now he is sent over the larger obstacles. He will need to jump well in order to do so, but I do think he is a massive price when you compare his ability to the other runners in the field.
