Spinner showed bundles of heart to win the Long Walk, bookies have slashed his odds for Cheltenham glory
The Long Walk Hurdle may have just given us a vision of the future. Sam Spinner, the horse bought for just £12,600 by Paul and Caron Chapman, showed staying power and plenty of heart to hold off L’Ami Serge and win at Ascot, giving trainer Jedd O’Keefe his first ever Group 1 success.
Originally planned to feature on an undercard race at Cheltenham, the plan will have changed dramatically because going for a Stayers Hurdle triumph is well within this five-year olds reach.
Bookies have reacted swiftly based on what they saw, as odds have been slashed across the board. A 25-1 shot this morning, a best price of 6-1 is all you can get, making Spinner a main rival now for the likes of Nichols Canyon and Apples Jade.
It’s no surprise to see hundreds of bets come in for him, including multiple two and three figure stakes. A massive 84% of bets on the race since last night have gone his way and any person that got the larger price will be feeling very happy right about now.
Oddschecker Spokseman George Elek: “It was a brilliant performance from a horse and a yard that have taken on the big boys and won. There’ll be people standing to win more than the £12,600 the horse cost, but you won’t get big odds on Sam Spinner winning the Stayers anymore: He’s now just 6-1 from 25s.”
