The seven-year-old was making his debut over fences after showing smart hurdles form last season
Malcom Jefferson looks to have another promising chaser on his hands on the evidence of Mount Mews’ impressive debut display over fences at Doncaster on Tuesday.
Sent off the 30/100 favourite of the three-runner field, the seven-year-old looked a natural over the larger obstacles as he put in a number of immaculate leaps en route to a comfortable seven length victory.
A modest pace was set early on as the three runners made their way to the home straight where Mount Mews jumped to the front under the guidance of Brian Hughes. Once at the front, he never looked likely to be caught as the race developed into a sprint for home.
Bookmakers were suitably impressed by the performance with Bet365 initially pricing him up at 25/1 for the Arkle in March before cutting him into 20/1 just moments later.
Willie Mullins’ Footpad remains the 7/4 favourite for the two mile contest after posting two impressive performances so far this season.
Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “There was plenty to like about Mount Mews first effort over fences. He put in a number of accurate jumps throughout and when he did get close to a few of the obstacles up the home straight he was smart enough to get himself out of trouble. The form of Tuesday’s race is obviously nothing to write home about but all he could do was beat the horses in front of him and he managed to do that with the minimum of fuss.”
