Sam Spinner – 23.31% of all ante-post bets on the market
Five out of seven over hurdles, he put in a career best when strolling away with the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot just before Christmas on his first start over three miles. Those in behind him that day rate the best the UK has to offer in the staying division, minus perhaps Finian’s Oscar (more on him later). The manor of that victory (travelled powerfully before pulling clear under hands and heels) marks him out as one of the leading contenders and with bookmakers now best price 9/2 - had been 25’s before his maiden Grade 1 success – he is the one to beat in March.

Who is the Horse of the season so far?
I nominate Sam Spinner he has been a real star for me pic.twitter.com/lmNTLFfCp0
Finian’s Oscar – 16.9%
The season began with Cheltenham aspirations but with novice chasing the name of the game. Some lacklustre efforts in that sphere has led to connections switching tact and reverting back to hurdles with the Stayers Hurdle now the target. A talented novice hurdler last season, he missed the Festival due to a minor setback before winning a Grade 1 at Aintree followed by a short head second over in Punchestown in a second Grade 1. A step up to three miles has looked on the cards for a while and should bring out even more improvement from the former point-to-point winner. As big as 50/1 late last year, the news of a change of plan has seen those odds tumble to best price 9/1 NRNB.
Supasundae - 13.65%
The same owners as Finian’s Oscar, Jessica Harrington’s eight-year-old arguably brings the strongest form to the table of the market principles. Winner of last season’s Coral Cup at the Festival, he’s since finished beaten just ½ length by superstar mare Apple’s Jade at Leopardstown over the three mile trip. Pacey enough to finish sixth in the Champion Bumper, before a seventh-placed finish in Altior’s Supreme, March will be the fourth year running the gelding has lined up at the Festival. Available at 25/1 in early December, that run behind Apples Jade saw his odds contract to 7/1 best price NRNB.
She’s stayed every yard, Apple’s Jade wins the Christmas Hurdle under @_Davy_Russel_ The race somewhat overshadowed by the sad passing of Nichols Canyon. #RIP

L’Ami Serge - 5.54%
The only runner who was even close to landing a glove on Long Walk winner Sam Spinner, Nicky Henderson’s eight-year-old has looked the part since stepped up in trip with some of his best efforts coming over 2m5f+. That December effort was only his second over three miles so there’s still hope there is improvement to come despite him already having 26 career starts. Currently best price 10/1 NRNB, he will form part of a very strong team of horses for owners Simon Munir & Isaac Souede.
Apple’s Jade - 4.4%
IF she were to run, she would be the one to beat on all known form with the six-year-old yet to finish out of the first two in her 14 starts to date. Her win in the Christmas Hurdle last time out was her first start over three miles and showed she has the stamina and class to run over the longer trip. However, her Festival target looks likely to be the Mares Hurdle for which she is 8/13 favourite (NRNB), a race she won last year beating the likes of Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini. 3/1 best price with NRNB for the Stayers the chancers among you could take the 10/1 on offer elsewhere, but risk not even getting a run for your money if she does go down her expected route.
