There's been a lot of interest in the top jockey market while Ruby Walsh finds his way back to the track.
The news that Ruby Walsh will not make his long-awaited return with a ride this weekend has caused a growth in support for Davy Russell to be top jockey at Cheltenham in three weeks’ time.
The leading jockey has been out since suffering a broken leg in a fall from Let’s Dance at Punchestown in November but has maintained he would be back to full fitness for the Festival.
Punters aren’t convinced though, with 43% of bets placed on the three-time Gold Cup winning jockey and fellow Irishman, Davy Russell.
While still fourth in the market, his odds have come in from 12/1 to 10/1 over the last week, with Ruby’s lengthening from 1/2 to 4/6 in the same time period.
Walsh does look a vulnerable favourite given that his boss Willie Mullins won't be going to Cheltenham with his usual hand of short priced favourites.
Nicky Henderson, who has some of the Festival's shortest price favourites, will spread his rides around different jockeys, but Russell is likely yo get the Gigginstown plum rides.
Oddschecker spokesperson, George Elek: "With Gordon Elliot bringing over a superb string of horses for this year's Chetenham Festival, course specialist Davy Russell is in prime position to push past compatriot Ruby Walsh to scoop the most winners in the week, and punters clearly agree."
