Nick Scholfield: 'L'ami can Serge to victory in the Stayers'
Modus is a really good horse in the first race. There’s supposed to be a lot of rain tonight according to the forecast which could make the ground wetter and he could just get through it. I reckon he’d be slightly better on better ground but he’s that good I think he’ll run a good race. He’s a seriously nice horse and a solid jumper. He’ll get the better of Benatar.
As far as the Ryanair goes I’ve changed my mind in recent days. I first thought Cue Card but with it being heavy I can see Un De Sceaux winning easily and Frodon being the one to chase him. I think he’ll handle it and with Sam Twiston-Davies back on him I can see him riding into second.
L’Ami Serge will be a serious threat in this race. He’s run in Auteuil in properly deep ground, it gets really bad there and he won there in June and stays properly. Everything has come right for him. Yanworth would want better conditions over that trip.
If you want a horse that likes it soft/heavy in the 16:10 then Movewiththetimes is certainly one. He looks a big price and he’s gone well at Cheltenham on heavy before. There’s no doubt in my mind that Laurina wins the Mares and I’m gutted for Ruby. Commiserations go out to him especially considering he’s just come back, I imagine it’ll rule him out of Aintree, Fairyhouse and Punchestown.
As far as the last race goes I’d certainly be looking at the jockey’s rather than the horses. Derek O’Connor on Pendra and Jamie Codd on Squouateur are two that stand out for me.
